How to score more marks in competition exams?

I hope you have read my previous blog post on difference between board exams and competitive exams. ( Click here to read).

This blog is in English Only. This is because 1) This blog is already long. If I include hindi translation it will be very long. That's why I will share this in hindi in my next blog. 2) This is for students. That's why English.

Here are points which make competitive exams difficult. After each point I have given my suggestion to students so that they will score more marks.

1) These exams are lengthy. Students get hardly 2 to 3 minutes maximum to solve each question.
Solution: Strictly skip any question if it goes beyond 3 minutes ( this time is found out by simply dividing total time in minutes by total number of questions.) Come back to this question again at the end if time permits.

2) These exams have negative marks for wrong answer.
Solution: Always read instructions given at the beginning of the question paper at the start. Underline instruction for negative marks so that you can read whenever you want. Also do not guess answer of any question. Be really careful if questions carry -2 marks for wrong answer.

3) More than one subjects are included in question paper. Also every exam paper  start with different subject. Students begin with first subject in the paper. This subject may not be their favourite or strong subject. Their favourite subject is at the end. In this scenario students face tough subject first, get frustrated. In the end they get less time for their favourite subject.
Solution: One day before the exam student must decide which subject he/she will attempt first, then second and third. This decision will be based on the confidence student has on solving problems of each subject. It may happen that your chosen subject has most number of difficult questions. But don't worry. Stick to 3 minutes rule I have given in point 1.

4) Questions are multiple choice type and many times tricky.
Ans. When ever you solve any question very easily, take a pause and read the question again. Check choices again. This time make sure other options are not correct. I suggest you to spend one minute more on the questions you think it is easy. And make sure you don't get negative marks on these questions.

5) Questions are always unseen.
Ans. Try to solve as many books as you can at home. While doing this set time of 2 minutes to solve questions. This way you will be habitual to solve unseen questions within time limit.

6) Pattern of question paper changes every year.
Suggestions- JEE Advance always change paper pattern. Infact afternoon session paper pattern is different than morning session. Coaching classes set different patterns during exams. Practice these papers again at home whenever you get time. Also appear in different Olympiads. This gives good practice.

There are many such points and because of above mentioned points students make errors. Like
1) Students solves all the questions one after another from the beginning. Spend more time if required. Many times difficult questions are given at the beginning and very easy at the end of question paper. In this case student get no time to solve very easy questions.
Suggestions- I will talk about this in my next blog. But yes right way is, to skip difficult questions and move ahead. Revisit these questions only after you complete entire subject or paper.

2) Which questions are to be skipped? Questions are of different types. Like a) very easy b) easy but with lot of calculation, c) tricky, d) question which require in-depth knowledge of specific subject. e) many times they are combination of two to three chapters.
Suggestions- At home while solving problems set time for solving each problem ( as i have mentioned in point 1). Also skip questions which you think is very difficult or which require lengthy calculations. Practice at home which question to skip. You can get your doubts cleared at classes. But don't waste time at home also. This way you will learn to identify type of questions which i have mentioned above and solve only those where you can get correct answer. ( I will talk about this in detail in my next blog.)

3) Students don't spend equal amount of time for each subject. For example 3 hours of paper and three subject means one hour per subject. But they forget to check the time. This way they are loosing marks in last subject.
Suggestions- Devote equal time in all three subjects. You may be tempted to spend more more time in first subject you solve. But it is better to move ahead with the next subject. You can always return back at the end if time permits.

3) Students take each question very seriously without skipping any. They end up wasting lot of time and Complete only half of paper.
Suggestions - Never do this even at home also. Learn how to skip. Also accept the fact that you are not going to get 100% score. So read and start with next question.

Above errors are related to selection of subject & questions. But now look at following errors.

1) In offline exam students select subject correctly, select question correctly, get the correct answer but mark bubble on wrongly on other question number. They are so busy in solving problems that they are not careful while bubbling the answer.
Suggestions - Practice at home your strategy regarding when you will bubble on answer sheet. My son only bubbles after completing one subject. He never bubble answer sheet after every question he solve. Yes in initial papers you may forget but practice at home, you will be ready for next exam.

2) In offline question paper students can see entire page which has two to three questions. They can quickly select which question to solve first. But in Online exam they can see only one question at a time. Many students are not comfortable with this scenario.
Suggestions - solve many online papers at home. You will get used to it. All the future exams will be online. So it's better to get used to it.

I hope students will find above points useful while giving competitive exams.

Difference Between board exam and competitive exams.

Let's talk about the differences between board exams and competitive exams. 1) Board have individual exams for each subject. Competitive exams have one paper wherein all subjects are covered. 2) Board exams require subjective answers. Whereas in competition exams correct answer have to be picked or written.( बोर्ड परीक्षाओं में SUBJECTIVE उत्तरों की आवश्यकता होती है। 3) In Board exams how you write answers and which steps are written to achieve an answer also carry marks. So even if the answer is wrong but steps are correct then student will get some partial marks. However in competition exams steps or how you describe is not considered. Only the correct answer is given marks.
